Can My Baby Eat Yogurt?

Yes, yogurt can be a yummy part of your baby’s diet! It is high in protein, calcium and beneficial bacteria that can aid digestion. If you have a family history of milk allergies you should consider waiting to start yogurt and discuss it with your doctor. Most pediatricians recommend you start it at 7-8 months introducing it over 3-5 days a little at a time.

It’s important that you only offer whole milk yogurt that is plain and unsweetened. Most of the yogurt available is low-fat or fat free, but babies need lots of fat in their first year for proper growth. Regular or Greek varieties are fine. Skip the flavored yogurts because they include a lot of added sugar or sweeteners, but if you want to add more flavor to the plain stuff mix in a small amount of a food that Baby has already tried. You can even add a little water and make a baby smoothie in a sippy cup!

Yogurt is acceptable before whole milk because there is no risk of it replacing the breast milk or formula that makes up the majority of your baby’s diet. The culturing process also breaks down the lactose and reduces the milk proteins making it easier to digest.
